Oakland Accessory Dwelling Unit Project
Neighborhood Housing Services of the East Bay an affiliate of RNHS has been selected by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative for New Oakland Accessory Dwelling Unit Project.
We are excited to announce that a joint venture of Neighborhood Housing Services of the East Bay, blinkLAB! Architecture, and RBA Creative, was selected by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) through a competitive RFQ process to develop an innovative program to promote Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Oakland. ADUs, also known as in-law units, granny flats, backyard cottages, or junior apartments, provide an incredible opportunity to increase affordable housing options in Oakland and provide financial security and flexible living arrangements for households. This program envisions providing financial resources and project management assistance to homeowners to build ADUs.
This announcement marks the start of a 6-month planning phase to develop a program focused on specific lower-income neighborhoods and homeowners, which will set the framework for a successful program launch to the public in 2021. We believe that well-designed programs can help everyone, and your input will be vital in the process.
The foundational principle of this initiative is Equity. The goals of the program are to create housing that is affordable and delivered quicker to market, to provide wealth-building opportunities for homeowners, and to supplement economic development strategies for local small businesses.
