NHS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation founded in 1981. NHS is a HUD-designated Housing Counseling Center, a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) as well as a chartered affiliate of  NeighborWorks^® America.

Our Business

To revitalize neighborhoods by providing quality affordable housing options, education and services for people of modest means.

For nearly 200 years, African Americans and other minorities were barred from owning real estate in the United States.  Even after the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, illegal practices such as redlining by financial institutions and steering by real estate professionals, left African Americans and other minorities in deeply segregated, resource-deprived neighborhoods.

In 1981, with support from NeighborWorks® America, a group of low-income residents formed NHS - an organization dedicated to reversing the adverse effects of systemic segregation, redlining, disinvestment, and blight. 

NHS is founded upon the belief that residents, government, businesses and financial institutions all hold a stake in securing healthy communities for people at all income levels.  NHS is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors that represent each stakeholder segment.
